Stone town

The Stone Town is a phenomena site/ destination and a melting pot of cultures and one of the last remaining ancient towns in Africa offering a rare cultural and historical insight into a former era of trade and exploration. This beautiful town has a labyrinth of chaotic alleyways interposed between towering limestone house with ornately carved arched hardwood door with brass finishing and terracotta roofs.

Stone Town is the historical center of Zanzibar City – the capital of the Zanzibar Archipelago, the town is a primary trading post on the spice, silk and slave trade routes for over a millennium. Stone Town is a unique meeting place with a blend of African, Indian, Arabian and European culture and is one of the few remaining ancient towns in Africa.

Because of the beauty and historical value of the Stone Town, it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Stone Town is a visually beautiful city with old colonial building and exquisitely carved Zanzibari doorways, during your visit in this beautiful city your senses will be overwhelmed with the scent of the sea and spice and the calls to prayer echoing from the minarets.

Things to do in the Stone Town

Stone Town has a lot to offer for each and every visitor on a holiday in Zanzibar with plenty of activities.

Forodhani Garden Markets

The Forodhani Garden Markets is one of the most popular sites to visit in The Stone Town during your tour, the market opens late in the afternoon at 5 pm and runs until 9 pm. In the market, locals and tourists gather for some alfresco street dinning – colorful stalls and grills that are lined with kebabs, local fish, coconut bread, grilled cassava, roasted corn, sweet potato chapatti and fresh fruit drinks. This market is one of the liveliest areas in the Stone Town and the food is tasty as well as very affordable.

Darajani Market

The Darajani Market is another popular market / site in the Stone Town excellent for spices, fresh meat, fruit and vegetables. This market is perfect for visitors who prefer quieter market experiences and it is best to visit the market in the morning when the seller are still setting up and the produce/items are still fresh.

Mtoni Palace Ruins

The Mtoni Palace Ruins is a beautiful site to visit offering visitors an insight into the former administrative and trade power of Zanzibar, every Tuesday and Friday there is a concert with traditional melodies, dances and a buffet.

At this site, the night begins with a guided tour of the ruins, followed by a buffet with final performance to finish off the tour. You can also attend the traditional coffee ceremony with coffee roasted the Zanzibari way.

Mtoni Palace Ruins

Old Slave Market and the Cathedral of Christ Church

The Anglican cathedral of Christ Church is a symbolic site in the Stone Town, the church was built by a British abolitionist symbolically over the old whipping post of the Island’s largest slave market.

The church was the first African cathedral in East Africa, the church offers beautiful architecture and important knowledge about the history of the slave trade in the country.

Old Slave Market and the Cathedral of Christ Church

Hamami Persian baths

The Hamami Persian baths were the first public baths built in Zanzibar by Shirazi architects from Iran, unfortunately the baths are no longer in use but can pop your head in and have a look after seeking for permission from the caretaker who will unlock the gate for your at a small fee.

St Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral

This cathedral was built by French missionaries in 1893 – 7 and stands for a memory of European colonial presence in Zanzibar, the cathedral has twin spires that are familiar feature to Stone Town and its front doors are only open during mass but you can enter through the back when these are closed.

Exploring on Foot

Most of the sites in the Stone Town are situated within a walking distance, the town is known as a maze, a veritable labyrinth where maps are of little use which makes wandering into the narrow alleys of the Stone town an activity to look forward for.

You can also have a guided tour in the city and usually the walking tour last for 3 hours, these tours are filled with the history of Zanzibar and will give you a glimpse of the layout of the town.

Spice Tour

Zanzibar Archipelago is known exotically as the “Spice Islands” for its historical and modern role as one of the main producers of spice. Taking a spice tour during your holiday is a must do as it takes you on a walk through a spice farm to see cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper, lemongrass, vanilla and nutmeg. This will help you appreciate the island’s rich history in the spice trade.

Zanzibar Island is a great destination to visit, however as you are planning a holiday to this beautiful island. Here are the 14 mistakes you should avoid.

14 mistakes to avoid making in Zanzibar

  1. Don’t wear revealing clothing

Zanzibar is an Islamic conservative nation and it is very important for every one including visitors to dress modestly when out and about in the public, females are encouraged to wear clothes which cover their legs and arms, so leave the miniskirts and tank tops at home.

Visitors/ tourists can be fined for indecent dressing.

As a tourist it is best to wear loose – fitting clothing items that cover your chest, stomach and legs, see through or tight clothing should be avoided.

  1. Don’t drink tap water

Tap water in Zanzibar is not safe, make sure to stock up on bottled water which you can buy everywhere.

  1. Don’t drink alcohol

Zanzibar is an Islamic country so alcohol is prohibited and because of this it is not sold in most stores, though some hotels and resorts serve alcohol and wine. Note that drinking in public and being drunk in the public is prohibited.

  1. Don’t visit Stone Town on a weekend

The Stone Town is the main tourist hub in Zanzibar and it can very crowded over the weekends, if you are looking for a more peaceful experience, it is better to visit during the week.

It is recommended to visit the Stone town with a guide as it is easy to get lost in the narrow streets.

  1. Don’t forget to carry insect repellent

There is a wide spread of mosquitoes in Zanzibar, so it is important to park a good insect repellent to save you from their bites. There are several mosquito repellents on sale in Zanzibar, however it is best you come with your own fitting your interest and health conditions.

  1. Don’t leave your belongings unguarded

Zanzibar is a safe travel destination, however it is important to be careful with your belongings. Do not leave your bags or valuables unguarded and always keep your passport and money on you. Zanzibar has plenty of safe sites to visit and accommodation facilities to stay so you do not need to worry about your safety.

  1. Don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path

Zanzibar is a beautiful tropical destination with plenty to see and to do away from the main tourist areas, if you are willing to explore and have an adventure, you will be rewarded with some amazing hidden gems.

If you are brave enough, you can wonder around and get lost in the jungle which can be a little daunting. This is not recommended for solo travelers, it is always best to have someone with you just in case.

  1. Don’t take pictures without their permission

In Zanzibar and other parts of the world, it is considered rude and disrespectful to take pictures of people without their permission, so you should not do it.

Yes, you may be intrigued by the many beautiful native people in their colorful cultural clothing, it is best to ask for their permission or you may be asked to delete the photos or in more extreme cases forced to leave the country.

  1. Don’t Swim at the beach after dark

Zanzibar has many beautiful beaches but it is advised not to swim in them after dark, there have been several cases of people being robbed and attacked at night so it best to be safe rather than sorry.

There is also not much light on the beach after dark, so it can be difficult to see where you are going. If you love swimming, please do it during the day.

  1. Don’t forget your sunscreen

Zanzibar is a hot and sunny destination and it is easy to get sunburned, make sure you pack a good sunscreen and apply it regularly while you are there for a vacation.

It is also possible to buy sunscreen in Zanzibar’s store, however it is always a good idea to have your own just in case.

  1. Don’t miss out on the food

Local meals in Zanzibar are an adventure of their own right most especially for culinary lovers, Zanzibar is known for its delicious food, so make sure to try as much as you can while on your vacation. The best way to do this is to head to the markets and try out several local foods, you will find a variety of different foods in the markets from seafood to curries to sweet desserts.

Some of the best local dishes you must try in Zanzibar include

  • Mbausi (a spicy beef dish)
  • Pilau (a rice dish with meat or vegetables)
  • Mashua (a type of squash)
  • Samosas (fried pastry filled with meat or vegetables)
  • Mkate waMbaazi (flatbread made from millet flour)
  • Chai (tea)
  1. Don’t walk alone in the night

Although Zanzibar is a safe destination, it is not recommended to walk alone at night as there have been cases of people being mugged and attacked. If you are out and about after dark, it is best to stick with a group of people.

Zanzibar is known to be extremely dark at night so it is easy to get lost and become a potential target of danger.

If you are a solo traveler, try to avoid walking around night.

  1. Don’t haggle excessively

Zanzibar is known for its lively markets where you can buy all sorts of souvenirs to take home with you as souvenirs, when buying some of the beautiful items it is important to haggle for a good price, don’t be afraid to bargain.

However, remember not to haggle too much as you may offend the seller.

Tanzania is a third world country so remember to be respectful of people’s belongings and do not expect them to give you free things. Though haggling at market centers or stall is expected, try to be polite about it.

  1. Don’t go to Zanzibar during the rainy season

Zanzibar experiences long rains in Zanzibar in March, April, May to June and short rains in November and December, as a traveler you should avoid visiting the island this season as it is not only uncomfortable but also potentially dangerous to travel. The roads can be quite dangerous to drive in and chances of getting sick from the mosquitoes are high.

Zanzibar is a wonderful beach holiday destination with plenty to offer to tourists, the best way to enjoy your holiday to Zanzibar is to relax and go with the flow, also be prepared for things which will be a little different from what you are used to. well Zanzibar stands to be unique in terms of the acceptable things as compared to its East African counterparts of Uganda , Rwanda , Kenya and Tanzania mainland itself.

History of Zanzibar

Zanzibar is strategically placed as an incredibly important part of the trade route through the Indian Ocean, because of this it gained the nickname of “Spice Island” throughout the years of exporting and trading exotic spices including cloves, tamarind among others.

Throughout the years, countless colonial powers like Oman, Portugal and the Great Britain were in constant fight over the control of this island found in the Indian Ocean. Oman seemed to have the largest and longest influence in the religion and culture used on the island for more tragic purposes for the slave trade.

Zanzibar Island comprises of remains of the huge slave industry that used Zanzibar as its hub, the Prison Island off the coast of Stone Town was used as a jail for rebellious slaves and the less rebellious were sent to America and England to work as laborers on plantations.

Zanzibar island was so important to the Oman and their slave industry that the Sultan of Oman and in 1832, he made it the capital city.

In the 60s, the African locals started a revolution to over through the apartheid Omani rule and they succeeded, Zanzibar united with the neighboring Tanganyika to form what is known today as Tanzania.

Although it is still warm with afternoon downpours being quite common and you would probably find yourself stuck indoors most your holiday.

What to Wear in Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim country with 99% of the population being Muslims with a few small Christianity population which are considered “minority”, however there is no real requirement to dress conservatively.

There are very moderate Muslims who are used to seeing tourists, as a tourist no one will make you uncomfortable for wearing shorts, short skirts, sundresses or bare shoulders throughout the town or bikinis on the beautiful beaches.

Note: it is more recommended you wear conservatively most especially if you are not at the beaches.

Zanzibar is a very open destination, so feel free to dress as you would like.

Cost/Prices of A Zanzibar Holiday

Zanzibar Island is a perfect destination for budget and luxury travelers, as a traveler if you are comfortable with staying in hostels or small bungalows and eating at small local restaurants, it can be around $ 50 – $ a day per person.

However, hotels can get quite expensive in the Northern Coast. Nungwi and Kendwa have the most expensive accommodation facilities, the Eastern Coast is almost half that price.

Since, tourism is a fairly new to Zanzibar, only within the past 10 years, majority of the hotels and resorts are built in western style which makes the prices relatively low.

Best sunset spots in Zanzibar : Although Tanzania is most well-known for its animal safaris, culture, and hiking safaris, many tourists visit the country for the spectacular sunset views in Zanzibar. The beauty of Zanzibar’s sunrises and sunsets is another major draw for tourists on safari holidays there. Even though it is not widely publicized, this is another another incredible and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have on your African safari.

Zanzibar sunsets look like they were plucked straight from a picture. One of the most luxurious honeymoon destinations in the world has a backdrop of magnificent sunsets. Honeymooners treat themselves to a relaxing boat ride to take in the spectacular scenery. Beautiful white sands and azure blue waters take on a breathtaking hue as the African sun sets.

sunset in zanzibar

When the sun sets in Zanzibar.

From Michamvi, Nungwi, and Kendwa, you can capture some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world on Zanzibar. If you’re visiting Zanzibar, you’re definitely curious about the ideal time to catch the sun setting. It is best to stay at a hotel right on the beach, but if that’s not possible, keep in mind that the sun sets about 6 or 6:20 p.m. Relax and take in the beauty of a Zanzibar sunset with a meal or a drink around sunset (about 5 p.m.).

Where, exactly, do you recommend I go to see the sun go down? If you’re planning a safari vacation to Zanzibar, Tanzania, these are the top spots to watch the sunset.

If you want to watch the sun go down from the east coast, Michamvi is your best bet. Distance from this little town to the hotel is around 30 minutes. Travel to Kae Funk, a tranquil eatery where you may take in the vibrant display from the hanging beds. Watch the sun go down behind a cloudscape reminiscent of cotton candy and marvel at the dynamic sky. Relax with a beverage of your choice as you watch the sun dip below the horizon in a serene setting on the sea.

Compared to other places, Michamvi stands out due to its relative calm and multicultural citizenry. Going to Michamvi to watch the sunset is a great way to meet kind, receptive, and genuine locals who will quickly become some of your closest companions. If you’re visiting Zanzibar for the first time and are looking for some solitude, Michamvi is the place to go. After all, everyone is different, and they came to the island for various reasons. As you explore the island and extend your stay, you’ll pick up on the varying atmospheres that may be found in various spots. Some of Zanzibar’s Finest Sunset Viewing Areas.

Nungwi

You know, how about a different, livelier sunset? If you enjoy sunsets while conversing with friends, creating new contacts, or playing volleyball with strangers, then Nungwi is “your go-to” destination. The most spectacular sunsets attract a large number of sightseers who come to enjoy the lively atmosphere, tasty treats, and gorgeous sky colors. Take in the scene as ships sail by at dusk while playing African music, tourists and locals play football on Nungwi Beach, and Maasai relax on the sand at the end of a busy day.

sunset in zanzibar

Some of the best places to see the sunset in Zanzibar are from the rooftops of popular restaurants and bars like Gerry’s Bar & Restaurant, Nungwi Dreams’ Skybar Zanzibar, Istanbul Restaurant & Bar, and the rooftop bars of the Z Hotel. You may view the sunset from countless vantage points in Nungwi; even if you have a favorite spot, you shouldn’t limit your Zanzibar sunset safari experience to just just one spot.

Where to Watch the Sun Set in Zanzibar
Kendwa, on the coast of Nungwi, is where you’ll find Nungwi Beach

Visitors to this premier Zanzibar beach can also enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving in addition to the sunset safari experience. A somewhat stable tide makes this one of the few beaches on Zanzibar. Off the coast of this Zanzibar beach, you may be able to spot some vibrant starfish (but be sure not to pick up these creatures or disturb them in their natural habitat). The sunsets at Kendwa Beach are world-famous, so be sure to be there for the best viewing. When the sun goes down, the beach takes on a new kind of energy, thanks to the nightlife and the calm beach parties.

The sunset at Kendwa Beach can be seen from a variety of vantage points, including lounging on the beach with a drink in hand or aboard a Dhow cruise. If you and some friends want to go out and watch the sunset from one of the many dhow boats built locally, you’re in luck. A group of 25-30 people would be too much for the doo boat, but if the season is sluggish, you might get the whole thing to yourself. With two weeks at your disposal, you can try out both a luxury catamaran and a dhow boat to find the perfect vessel for your sun-filled island getaway.

In conclusion, these are just a handful of the many locations on Zanzibar that are ideal for watching the sun go down. Enjoy your safari vacation in Zanzibar to its fullest by taking advantage of these fantastic locations and everything they have to offer.
